Scope of this Standard

This standard specifies minimum requirements for driveway gates used primarily to control vehicular access to premises. Included are requirements for design, fabrication, finishes, and installation. It also outlines specific safety features to be incorporated as a means of mitigating against failure during operation.

NOTE Annex E contains recommendations for good maintenance practices associated with driveway gates.

This standard applies to automated and manually operated metal sliding gates and swing gates of widths up to 6.1 m (20 ft).

NOTE Driveway gates in Trinidad and Tobago are largely constructed of steel, wrought iron and aluminium. Gates constructed of timber are not common but requirements for such gates can be addressed in the future if it becomes necessary.

This standard does not apply to the following:
a) gates designed primarily for pedestrian use;
b) roller or shutter doors and gates;
c) bi-fold or multi-fold swing gates;
d) security barriers used for controlling vehicular access; and
e) sliding gates with sloping tracks.

NOTE 1 This standard is intended to primarily address driveway gates for residential premises and, in particular, specify key safety features. Examples of member sizes given in the Annexes are only indicative and relate to gates which are normally no more than 6.1 m (20 ft) wide and 2.4 m (8 ft) high. However, each gate is unique and should be adequately designed to withstand the load conditions to which it will be subjected.

NOTE 2 The principles and practices in this standard will generally apply to larger gates such as those used on commercial, institutional and industrial premises; in such cases, the design should take account of the appropriate loads and operating characteristics of the gate.
